reader assumes position of external observer to whom time is almost meaningless. but using an ordinary living room, we can imagine how our own lives would appear. duality, a doubling or fragmenting of the reading experience: deeply melancholy, but experienced at one remove. the whole thing is an exercise in stepping outside immediate reality. gentle, muted colour scheme an extension of this.
banal, joyful and tragic events are all treated equally. both repetition (often for humorous effect) and total juxtaposition in what we see. there’s a quiet, consolatory happiness in watching the events of different times dance around each other (rhythm & composition add to the effect of a dance).
